MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports in August fell nearly 2% on year to 150,000 tonnes, the Soybean Processors Association of India said on Tuesday. Cumulative exports of soymeal in Oct-Aug, the first 11 months of edible oil year 2024–25, fell to 1.86 million tonnes from 2.08 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, data from SOPA showed.

India exported soymeal to more than 70 countries from October to August, with Bangladesh, Nepal, Germany, France, Japan, and Kenya being the top buyers, according to the association. Soymeal production in August was at 710,000 tonnes, unchanged from a year ago. Output in the first 11 months fell to 8.29 million tonnes from 8.96 million tonnes a year ago.

Soybean arrivals in August were reported at 400,000 tonnes, lower than 550,000 tonnes a year ago. The arrivals in Oct–Aug fell to 9.9 million tonnes from 11.3 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.

Soybean crushing during Oct-Aug was 10.5 million tonnes, down from 11.4 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA estimates showed. Total soybean stocks with agencies, oil mills, traders, and farmers were at 1.29 million tonnes, down from 2.21 million tonnes a month ago, SOPA data showed. Soybean stocks with farmers, traders, and processing plants were at 784,000 tonnes as of August-end and those with government agencies – National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India – were about 503,000 tonnes, SOPA said.

Meanwhile, soymeal stocks at the end of August fell to 113,000 tonnes from 117,000 tonnes in July. The fall in soymeal stocks can be attributed to higher than expected exports and lower arrivals, and crushing.

Soybean is crushed to extract soyoil, leaving the by-product soymeal. This is primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and rich in protein, making it attractive in global feed markets. However, competitive pressure from cheaper feed alternatives such as distillers' dried grains with solubles weighs on exports. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal.  End
