MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, rice, and maize were steady in key markets across the country due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. They expect prices of wheat to fall in the near-term due to higher stocks. Similarly, market participants expect maize prices to fall in the near-term due to prospects of higher output in the ongoing season.
WHEAT prices in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were stable at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of wheat were also largely steady at INR 2,835 per 100 kg in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, said local trader Gaurav Kochar. He said prices are in a downtrend due to slower demand for the staple grain amid stocks with market participants.
Although there is festival demand that may support wheat prices, government's stock limit on trade entities and fears about commencement of the open market sales scheme by the end of this month are likely to weigh on prices of the grain. In August, the government cut stock limits on the quantity of wheat that trade entities can stock till Mar. 31.
The government is also likely to begin open market sales of wheat by the end of this month and has allocated around 3 million tonnes for the scheme, according to sources. It typically begins the sale of wheat in the open market from July or August but did not do so this year, citing comfortable prices.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were largely steady from the previous day at INR 2,150 per 100 kg and those in Karnataka's Davanagere were also steady from the previous day at INR 2,250 per 100 kg. Arrivals in Davanagere were 200-300 bags (1 bag = 60 bag), unchanged from the previous day, local trader Shiva Kumar said.
Kumar expects prices to fall by INR 100-INR 200 by mid-October due to arrivals of the new maize crop. Arrivals of the new crop have started in parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Kochar expects maize prices to fall in the same range by the end of this month amid new crop arrivals.
The area under maize in India rose 12.5% to 9.5 million hectares as of Friday, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of fresh cues. Market participants expect the price of the premium aromatic variety to go up by as much as INR 500 per 100 kg because of extensive damage to crops after the recent deluge in the key growing states of Punjab and Haryana.
The price of 5% broken rice at the Vashi market was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a non-basmati premium variety, was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
