MUMBAI – The area under kharif soybean in the country has fallen over 2% on year to 11.6 million hectares as on Monday, the Soybean Processors Association of India said in a crop health report. As per government data, the total soybean sowing area across India is down 7.06% at 12.0 million hectares compared to the previous year, the association said.
Crop conditions are normal in many areas of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, but some regions are affected by yellow moaic virus and 6%, 8% and 8% of the total crop area has been damaged in these states, respectively, it said. In low-lying areas, excessive rainfall has caused water logging and crop damage, it said.
In Madhya Pradesh, the overall crop condition is normal and around 30% of the area is at the maturity stage, according to the crop health report. Short-duration varieties like JS-9560 are affected by yellow mosaic virus in some areas, resulting in smaller grain size and some empty pods, which might affet yields, it said.
Further, continuous rainfall in the last week has led to water loggng in low-lying areas, resulting in crop damage. Meanwhile, fields with early sowing and short-duration varieties have reached the harvest-ready stage, the association said in the report.
In Maharashtra, Beed, Hingoli, Osmanabad, Solapq Ahmednagar, Latur, and Nanded districts have been badly affected by heavy rains and water logging. Some areas are also affected by yellow moaic virus. Crops sown earlier and the varities that mature early are ready for harvest, it said.
The overall crop condition in Rajasthan is very poor owing to issues such as heavy rainfall causing damage in low-lying areas, weak plant growth, yellow mosaic virus, aerial blight and small grain size leading to low yields, according to the report.
The association has also commissioned a satellite-based area and crop health monitoring survey, it said.
The following table details the area under soybean cultivation, in hectares, in key states and the country:
| State | Govt estimate of acreage | SOPA's acreage estimate |
| Madhya Pradesh | 5,120,200 | 4,864,200 |
