MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell while those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday. Prices of turmeric and jeera fell due to subdued demand and rise in supply. Prices of coriander rose because of firm demand and restricted supplies in key spot markets.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC fell nearly 1% to INR 12,142 per 100 kg due to poor buying interest and rise in arrivals in spot markets, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to reports of damage to the standing kharif crop because of excessive rainfall in key producing regions, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Incessant rainfall in Nanded, Maharashtra, has damaged around 15% of the crop area, the advisory said.

The market is keeping an eye on the weather, which will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above-normal rainfall in September, SMC Global said. Rainfall is likely to be above normal at 109% of the long-period average over most parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell 0.2% to INR 19,190 per 100 kg as fundamentals remain bearish taking cues of weak demand, SMC Global said. The availability of ample carry-over stocks is also weighing on prices, SMC Global said. About 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was up 1.8% at INR 8,282 per 100 kg due to firm demand in spot markets and restricted supplies from key producing regions, analysts said. Prices are likely to remain supported in the near term as demand is expected to rise further due to the upcoming festivals, SMC Global said.
