MUMBAI – Prices of chana were mixed across key spot markets in the country Tuesday, amid weak demand and cheaper imports, traders said. Tur prices declined due to low demand while urad remained steady as demand matched supply, they said.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,050-INR 6,075 per 100 kilograms, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Demand for chana is sluggish despite the ongoing festival season, he said. "Usually, prices rise this time of the year due to active demand ahead of festivals such as Navratri but they (traders and millers) have already bought what they needed earlier," he said.
The availability of imports from Australia is also weighing on prices, Kedia said. The forward deals being made for the shipments of chana, which will arrive in the country between October and December, are cheaper than the domestic variety, he said. The quality of Australian chana is also better than the domestic variety, he said. "Australian chana is cleaner, slightly bigger, and has thinner skin," he said. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,700-INR 6,725 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices are weighed down by subdued demand, he said. There is ample availability of the legume, and there are enough stocks with farmers, millers, and stockists, he said. The availability of cheaper imports from African countries is also weighing on prices, he said. The shipments of African tur, which are likely to rise by the end of September, are priced in the range of INR 4,200-INR 4,800 per 100 kg, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, also fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,750-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh held steady at INR 7,425-INR 7,450 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh remained steady at INR 7,400 per 100 kg, they said. Prices of urad are steady as the demand for the pulse is on a par with its supply, they said.
Urad prices are likely to remain steady as concerns about supply due to crop losses in major producing states will be offset by continued imports, the association said. The market expects shortage of the legume in major growing states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh on heavy rainfall. However, continuous supplies from Myanmar will keep a check on any sharp price rise until the new crop arrives, the association said. End
