NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric fell while those of coriander and jeera rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Prices of turmeric fell on notable increase in acreage, supported by favourable rains during the current sowing season. Prices of jeera rose on buying at lower prices and prices of coriander were up on festival demand, according to analysts.
The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 0.2% at INR 12,330 per 100 kg because of a notable increase in acreage, analysts at Kedia Advisory said in a note. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15–20% increase in sowing this season, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
However, the downside was limited because of heavy recent rainfall, which reportedly has caused damage to standing turmeric crops in key growing regions, the brokerage said. Nanded in Maharashtra has suffered significant damage to crops, with around 15% of the turmeric area adversely affected, it said. Weather developments in September will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above-normal rainfall during the month, SMC Global said in a note. Rainfall in September is likely to be above normal at 109% of the long-period average over most parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The most-active October contract of JEERA rose 0.7% to INR 19,560 per 100 kg on buying at lower price levels after recent weakness due to subdued domestic and export demand, Kedia Advisory said. Comfortable supplies and sluggish foreign purchases are weighing on sentiment, they said. The rise is also being supported by the GST Council's decision to lower the goods and services tax rate to 5%, which is expected to support FMCG exports and domestic demand, providing a positive sentiment for the market, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was up 0.5% at INR 8,140 per 100 kg on strong buying as demand is expected to rise on account of upcoming festivities, analysts at SMC Global said.
