MUMBAI – Prices of maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell Monday due to prospects of higher output in the ongoing season, traders said. Wheat and rice were largely steady in key markets across the country due to lack of fresh cues.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore fell by INR 100 to INR 2,100 per 100 kilogram due to prospects to higher production, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Also, arrivals of the new maize crop have already started in a few markets, which is weighing on prices, traders said.

Prices of maize in Karnataka's Davanagere remained unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals also remained steady at 200-300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects price to fall by INR 100-200 after a week as new arrivals are likely to start.

The area under maize in India rose 12.5% to 9.5 million hectares as of Friday, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan were largely steady at INR 2,575-INR 2,590 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals also remained unchanged at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

The US Department of Agriculture has retained its wheat production estimate for India in 2025-26 at 117.5 million tonnes. Its forecast for domestic consumption is also unchanged at 112.5 million tonnes, and the ending stock unchanged at 17 million tonnes. The department raised its estimate for 2025-26 wheat supply in its monthly world agricultural supply and demand estimates report released Friday. The increase is due to higher production in major exporting countries.

Prices of sona masoori, a non-basmati RICE variant, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects prices to remain steady till October, as there are less sales taking place.

The global outlook for rice output in 2025–26 is estimated at 541.07 million tonnes, down from the previous estimate of 541.46 million tonnes, the US department said. For India, the department has retained its estimate for rice production at 151 million tonnes, but that for consumption has been raised to 127.00 million tonnes from 126.50 million tonnes.  End
