MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports in August were 1.7 million tonnes, up 7% on year, according to the data released by Solvent Extractor's Association of India Monday. Out of the total vegetable oil imports, edible oil imports were recorded at 1.6 million tonnes and non-edible oils stood at 55,821 tonnes for August, the press release showed.

The first 10 months of the oil year 2024-25 (Nov-Aug), total vegetable oil imports were at 12.7 million tonnes, down 7% from 13.7 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. During the same period total edible oil imports stood at 12.4 million tonnes compared to 13.5 million tonnes a year ago.

During Nov-Aug, refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein imports were at 995,711 tonnes, compared with 1.6 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year. Crude vegetable oil imports in Nov-Aug were at 11.4 million tonnes, compared with 11.9 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year. "The ratio of refined oil decreased to 8% from 12% due to lesser import of RBD Palmolien (refined, bleached and deodarised) and while crude (vegetable) oil ratio is increased to 92% from 88% mainly due to increased in import of soybean oil," SEA said the press release.

On May 30, the government slashed the basic import duty on crude edible oils--palm, soybean, and sunflower--to 10% from 20%, effectively reducing the total import duty to 16.5% from 27.5%. The widened duty differential of 19.25?tween crude and refined oils is a strategic master stroke--reinvigorating domestic refining, reducing dependency on cheap imports, and firmly placing 'Make in India' at the heart of our agri-value chain, the association had said.

Imports of crude palm oil in August were at 979,535 tonnes, compared with 700,711 tonnes a year ago, while crude palm oil imports in Nov-Aug were at 5.1 million tonnes, compared with 5.9 million tonnes a year ago. Imports of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein in June were at 8,000 tonnes, compared with 92,130 tonnes a year ago, according to the association. During Nov-Aug, Indonesia and Malaysia were the major suppliers of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein and crude palm oil to India.

Imports of refined oil became uneconomical as the duty difference between crude palm oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein increased. It started discouraging import of refined palmolein and shift demand back to crude oils, thereby revitalising the domestic refining sector.

Crude sunflower oil imports fell to 257,080 tonnes in August, compared with 284,108 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Crude sunflower oil imports in Nov-Aug fell to 2.3 million tonnes from 3.1 million tonnes a year ago. Soft oil imports jumped to 6.2 million tonnes in Nov-Aug from 5.8 million tonnes a year ago. "The share of palm oil sharply decreased to 50% from 57%, while Soft Oils increased to 50% from 43%," the association said.

Crude soyoil imports in August fell to 367,917 tonnes from 454,639 tonnes a year ago. Crude soyoil imports in Nov-Aug rose to 3.9 million tonnes from 2.7 million tonnes a year ago. During Nov-Aug, India imported 2.4 million tonnes of crude soybean degummed oil from Argentina, followed by 886,936 tonnes from Brazil, 188,384 tonnes from the US, and 192,364 tonnes from Russia. Crude sunflower oil was mainly imported from Russia, Ukraine and Argentina.

As of Sept. 1, the country's total edible oil stock was at 1.0 million tonnes in the ports compared with 966,000 tonnes a year ago. Edible oil stock in pipeline as of Sept. 1 was 1.9 million tonnes compared with 899,000 tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the SEA.

The early onset of the southwest monsoon in key oilseed-growing regions has significantly boosted kharif sowing, especially for groundnut and soybean. As of Friday, the country's total kharif oilseed acreage stood at 18.88 million hectares, down 3% from 19.39 million hectares a year ago. Total acreage of groundnut was 4.80 million hectares and soybean was 12.04 million hectares.

In view of the rising prices of edible oils, the government may consider releasing a substantial part of the country's edible oil stock into the market over the next three months, ahead of the upcoming harvest. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd., Haryana State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Ltd., and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Ltd. currently hold about 1.4 million tonnes of soybean and a similar quantity of rapeseed, according to the SEA.

The following table details edible oil imports in August, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
