MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its estimate of global cotton output in 2025–26 (Aug-Jul) to 117.68 million bales, up from 116.62 million bales projected in August, it said in the September edition of its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates monthly report. "The world cotton outlook for 2025-26 is revised to reflect expectations for higher production, consumption, and trade, and lower beginning and ending stocks," the report said.

World cotton consumption in 2025-26 (Aug-Jul) is also projected to be higher at 118.83 million bales, compared with 117.99 million bales last month. "World consumption is raised by almost 850,000 bales as increases in China and Vietnam are partially offset by a reduction in Turkey, with small changes in several other countries," the report said.

The USDA has increased its estimate for global cotton exports for 2025-26 by 100,000 bales to 43.70 million bales, supported by an increase in shipments from India and Australia. The estimate for stocks at the beginning of the year has been reduced by nearly 1 million bales to 74.06 million bales, largely reflecting higher consumption in China in 2024-25. With lower beginning stocks, ending stocks for 2025-26 are seen sliding by 770,000 bales to 73.14 million bales, the report said.

For India, the department has retained its cotton output estimate at 24 million bales and consumption at 25 million bales. It has raised India's cotton exports to 1.30 million bales from 1.00 million bales. Beginning stocks of cotton in the country for 2025-26 are seen at 9.97 million bales as against 9.85 million bales projected a month ago. The ending stocks estimate has been increased to 10.47 million bales from 10.25 million bales.

The Cotton Association of India, the leading lobby of cotton value chain in the country, has raised the country's cotton production estimate for the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season by 100,000 bales to 31.2 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg), pegged consumption at 31.4 million bales, and exports at 1.8 million bales. As reported by Informist, it had estimated cotton imports by India in 2024-25 at 4.1 million bales, with closing stocks at 6.06 million bales.  End
