MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Prices of turmeric fell due to poor demand and high arrivals. Prices of jeera and coriander declined on subdued demand. Additionally, jeera prices were weighed down because of the availability of large carry-over stocks.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC fell 1.6% to INR 12,390 per 100 kilograms on poor demand amid rising arrivals, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Prices have already been weighed down due to panic selling amid estimates of higher acreage of the spice in the ongoing kharif crop season, they said. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15–20% increase in sowing this season, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

The market is keeping an eye on the weather, which will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above normal rainfall in September, SMC Global said. Rainfall is likely to be above normal at 109% of the long-period average over most parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell 0.2% to INR 19,310 per 100 kg amid subdued domestic and export demand and the availability of large carry-over stocks, SMC Global said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most active October contract of CORIANDER was down nearly 0.8% at INR 8,096 per 100 kg due to subdued demand in spot markets, analysts said. Demand is expected to rise in the near term due to the upcoming festivals, which is likely to limit the downside in prices, SMC Global said. However, prices could be weighed down again in the medium term as fresh arrivals of the kharif crop of the spice begin, the brokerage firm added.
