MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell from the previous day on increasing arrivals, traders said. Prices of the staple grain in other markets remained steady Friday. Traders expect wheat prices to go down in the short term as the government is likely to start selling the grain in the open market by the end of the month. Prices of maize and rice were unchanged in key markets across the country, traders added.
The price of WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, fell as much as INR 40 to INR 2,550 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. The fall in price is due to the start of fresh arrivals in all parts of Rajasthan with rainfall easing. Arrivals in Kota rose to 18,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 16,000 bags the previous day, he said. Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market remained unchanged at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast favourable conditions for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of west Rajasthan starting Monday. The withdrawal of the monsoon usually starts around Sept. 17, and it withdraws from the entire country around Oct. 15.
News of the government's plan to start open market sales is also weighing on wheat prices, traders said. The government has allocated 3.0 million tonnes of wheat to be sold through auctions in the rabi marketing season 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said Thursday. While Chopra said the government will decide the timing of wheat sales on the basis of market conditions and prices, a government official told Informist the sales would begin from the end of the month.
Prices of MAIZE in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,250 per 100 kg on lack of fresh cues. Arrivals also remained unchanged at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Prices of maize are likely to fall INR 250 to INR 2,000 per 100 kg after one week as fresh arrivals are expected to start, he said.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, on a lack of fresh cues. Market participants expect the price of the premium aromatic variety to go up by as much as INR 500 per 100 kg following extensive crop damage after the recent deluge in the key growing states of Punjab and Haryana.
The price of 5% broken rice in the Vashi market was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a non-basmati premium variety, was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
