MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell from the previous day due to higher arrivals, traders said. Traders expect prices to fall in the near term as the government is likely to start selling wheat by the end of this month. However, prices in other key markets in the country were unchanged from the previous day. Prices of maize and rice were also unchanged from the previous day.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota fell by INR 10 to INR 2,590-INR 2,600 per 100 kilograms as arrivals rose to 16,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 8,000 bags the previous day, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market remained steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.
Worries about the government's open market sales is also weighing on prices. The government has allocated 3.0 million tonnes of wheat to be sold through weekly auctions under the open market sale scheme in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said. Another senior government official told Informist the government is likely to begin open market sales of wheat by the end of this month.
The government usually begins open market wheat sales in July or August. For the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales.
Prices of MAIZE in Karnataka's Davenagere were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg due to lack of new cues, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals remained unchanged at 200–300 (1 bag = 60 kg) bags. Prices of maize are likely to fall by INR 250 to INR 2,000 per 100 kg after 15 days as arrivals are likely to begin. However, till then prices are likely to be steady, he added.
Prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of new cues. Market participants expect prices of the premium aromatic rice to increase by INR 500 per 100 kg as the recent deluge in key growing states Punjab and Haryana is expected to have damaged a substantial part of the standing crop.
"There will be a shortage of basmati rice in Punjab and Haryana compared to last year, and we can expect the uptrend in prices to start by early October," said Rahul Chauhan, director of iGrain. The crop damage is limited to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, market participants said. Basmati rice grown in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh has not faced any such challenge so far, they said. So, the damage to the basmati rice crop in the flood-hit areas is unlikely to cause a shortage, Chauhan said.
The prices of 5% broken rice in Vashi market were also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the non-basmati rice variety, sona masoori, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
