MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has raised the country's cotton production estimate in the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season by 100,000 bales to 31.2 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) from its previous projection. The association said 30.7 million bales of cotton had been pressed as of Aug. 31. In 2023-24, India had produced 33.6 million bales of cotton.

The association updates its estimates almost every month, based on information from its members in 11 cotton-growing states and from trade sources. Production of cotton in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is estimated at 2.95 million bales in 2024-25, and in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, it is projected at 18.75 million bales.

Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 8.95 million bales, according to the association. Odisha and other states are likely to contribute 385,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production.

Total supply of cotton in the 2024-25 season is estimated at 39.26 million bales, against 38.05 million bales in the previous season. The association has estimated imports in 2024-25 at 4.1 million bales, up from 1.5 million bales in 2023-24. The government has extended the suspension of 11% import duty on raw cotton to Dec. 31 from Sept. 30. The move is aimed at protecting India's textile industry against the recently imposed 50% US tariff. The short-term waiver, notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs on Monday, is meant to stabilise domestic prices of cotton, relieve cost pressures on mills, and strengthen the competitiveness of textile exporters amidst fierce rivalry from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China, according to experts.

The decision follows a sharp rise in import volumes. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India's cotton imports soared 107.4% to $1.2 billion from $579.2 million the previous year. Australia remains the leading supplier of cotton, followed by the US, Brazil, and Egypt, Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative, said.

Almost 99% of India's cotton imports this year comprise fibre staple lengths of 28 millimetres or above, a grade preferred by mills seeking high-quality inputs to produce yarn and fabric for premium exports.

The cotton body has pegged exports at 1.8 million bales, against 2.8 million bales the previous year. The ending stock after the 2024-25 season is estimated at 6.1 million bales, against 3.9 million bales a year ago.

So far in the 2024-25 season, the total supply of cotton in India was 38.3 million bales as of Aug. 31 and demand was 28.6 million bales, according to the association. In the same period, India exported 1.7 million bales of cotton and imported 3.7 million bales.
