Telangana kharif area up 2% on yr at 13.09 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI - Kharif crop acreage in Telangana for the week ended Wednesday was 13.09 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares), up nearly 2% from the previous year's 12.86 million acres, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal area for the kharif season is 13.24 million acres, of which nearly 99% has been covered so far.

 

The acreage under major grains was up more than 18% on year to 673,216 acres, the report showed. Paddy acreage fell to 6.55 million acres from 6.68 million acres sown last year during the same period. Maize acreage rose on year to 636,705 acres from 523,905 acres, data showed. Total area sown under all coarse grains slipped to 7.23 million acres from 7.25 million acres a year ago, as per the report.

 

Under pulses, tur acreage was down at 490,833 acres from 520,996 acres last year and moong fell to 61,361 acres from 68,112 acres. The total area sown under pulses was down at 578,207 acres from 616,027 acres reported in the corresponding period last year. The total food grain acreage was down at 7.80 million acres from 7.86 million acres in the previous year. 

 

Under oilseeds, groundnut acreage slipped to 9,923 acres from 26,859 acres a year ago. Soybean acreage was also down at 362,101 acres from 380,868 acres reported last year during the same period. The total area sown under oilseeds fell to 373,319 acres from 411,892 acres last year.

 

Cotton acreage was up at 4.58 million acres from 4.48 million acres a year ago. The area under sugarcane was also up at 34,019 acres from 12,097 acres last year. Tobacco acreage fell to 3,223 acres from 12,097 acres, according to the data. 

 

For the week ended Wednesday, water levels in reservoirs across Telangana stood at 887.40 thousand million cubic metres, up from 836.33 thousand cubic metres a year ago, the report showed. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 10, the state recorded 746.9 millimetres of rainfall, 19?ove the normal of 627.3 millimetres, as per data from India Meteorological Department. 

 

In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 13.70 millimetres, ranging from 0.4 millimetres in the Nagarkurnool district to 82.8 millimetres in the Adilabad district, the state agriculture department said. Currently, the crops sown are at the vegetative growth stage to reproductive stage. "Inter cultivation and top dressing of fertilizer plant protection and operations are in progress. Paddy is in tillering to panicle initiation stage and inter-cultivation operations are in progress across the state," the report said.  End
