MUMBAI – Prices of wheat fell slightly in Kota, Rajasthan, as market participants expect the government sales to start soon, traders said. There was also talk in the market about allocation of the grain to be sold in the current year, they added. Maize prices were low in a few markets as arrivals of the new crop will commence by the end of September. Meanwhile, rice prices were steady from the previous day due to a lack of new cues in the key markets across the country, traders said.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota fell by INR 20 to INR 2,590 per 100 kilograms as traders expect the government to start open market sales for wheat, local trader Aniket Mehta said. However, arrivals fell to 8,000 (1 bag = 50 kg) from 12,000 bags on Monday, he said. Arrivals are usually high on Monday as the market is shut for two days during the weekend, he added.
Traders said the government has allocated the amount of wheat to be sold under the open market sales scheme in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). Gaurav Kochar from Ashok Nagar in Madhya Pradesh said the government is likely to release 2 million tonnes of wheat under the open market sales scheme. The government may also sanction an additional 1 million tonnes, and it will be released only if there is a need for it, he added.
The government usually begins open market wheat sales in July or August. For the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales.
Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market remained steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.
Prices of MAIZE in Karnataka's Davenagere were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg due to lack of new cues, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals remained unchanged at 200–300 (1 bag = 60 kg) bags. Prices of maize are likely to fall by INR 250 to INR 2,000 per 100 kg after 15 days as arrivals are likely to begin. "Prices are expected to be steady for the next 15 days," Kumar said.
Heavy rainfall in key states for the maize-growing crop, such as Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, did not affect the crop sown during the kharif season, he added. Prices of maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 to INR 2,200, local trader Kochar said. He said the prices fell considering the upcoming arrivals of the new crop.
Prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg respectively, due to lack of new cues. The prices of 5% broken rice were also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he said.
Prices of the non-basmati rice variety, sona masoori, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. The prices rose Tuesday as millers increased their prices, expecting damage to the paddy crops in the current season amid recent heavy rains. "There is no trade taking place as prices are high," Shankar said. End
