MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose, while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric rose due to supply concerns amid quality issues with stocks and damage to standing crops from rainfall. Prices of jeera fell due to a rise in selling pressure, while that of coriander were down due to subdued demand in spot markets.
The most active October contract of TURMERIC rose 1.1% to INR 12,200 per 100 kilograms due to rising quality issued with the stocks held at Nizamabad warehouses in Telangana, which are likely to affect supply, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Supply concerns have also emerged in major turmeric-producing areas in the country, where incessant rainfall has damaged standing turmeric crop, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
The market is keeping an eye on the weather developments in September, which will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above normal rainfall during the month, SMC Global said. Rainfall in September is likely to be above normal at 109% of the long-period average over most parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The most active September contract of JEERA fell 0.6% to INR 19,270 per 100 kg due to a rise in selling pressure amid the availability of huge carry-over stocks, SMC Global said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said. Jeera output in the ongoing kharif season is expected to mirror last year's production, supported by good sowing conditions in the country, Kedia Advisory said.
The most active October contract of CORIANDER was down nearly 0.2% at INR 8,246 per 100 kg due to subdued demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, demand is expected to rise in the near term due to the upcoming festivals, which is likely to limit the downside in prices, SMC Global said.
