Gujarat kharif acreage tad up on year at 8.30 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.30 million hectares as of Monday, up 0.4% from 8.27 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 97% has been covered so far.
Under major cereal crops, paddy acreage rose to 900,483 hectares from 885,451 hectares last year, the report showed. Maize acreage fell to 280,569 hectares from 285,316 hectares in the corresponding year while the area sown under bajra rose to 172,478 hectares from 167,954 hectares.
Under pulses, moong acreage fell to 48,293 hectares from 54,954 hectares in the corresponding year. The acreage under tur rose to 291,368 hectares from 227,330 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad fell to 82,997 hectares from 83,651 hectares a year ago.
The area sown under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares in the corresponding year, the report said. The area sown under soybean fell to 277,517 hectares from 299,857 hectares a year ago. Under sesame, the acreage fell to 40,787 hectares from 49,366 hectares a year ago while that of castor rose to 623,755 hectares from 547,068 hectares last year. The total area sown under oilseeds rose to 3.14 million hectares from 2.81 million hectares sown a year ago.
Cotton acreage fell to 2.08 million hectares from 2.36 million hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under vegetables also rose to 255,412 hectares from 253,139 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Sept. 9, Gujarat recorded 832.1 millimetres of rainfall, 30% above normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
