Rajasthan kharif area flat on year at 15.78 mln ha as of Tue

MUMBAI – Kharif crop acreage for Rajasthan was 15.78 million hectares as of Tuesday, largely flat from the 15.77 million hectares sown last year in the same period, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Rajasthan's normal area sown under kharif crops, which is the average of the past five years, is 16.45 million hectares, of which nearly 96% has been sown so far.
The area sown under paddy rose to 344,200 hectares from 297,820 hectares last year. Maize acreage rose to 985,324 hectares from 970,000 hectares last year and jowar acreage was also up on-year at 657,091 hectares from 640,200 hectares. The area sown under bajra fell to 4.315 million hectares from 4.324 million hectares the previous year, according to the report.
Moong acreage was up at 2.36 million hectares from 2.32 million hectares sown last year during the same period. The state's area sown under urad was also up at 313,330 hectares from 298,050 hectares last year. The acreage for tur surged to 14,922 hectares from 3,000 hectares sown in the previous year. The total area sown under pulses was up at 3.65 million hectares from 3.61 million hectares sown last year, according to the report.
In oilseeds, groundnut acreage rose to 990,637 hectares from 854,980 hectares last year. Soybean acreage fell to 983,238 hectares from 1.08 million hectares reported last year during the same period. The total acreage for all oilseeds rose to 2.35 million hectares from 2.29 million hectares last year, as per the report.
The area sown under cotton rose to 628,849 hectares from 519,530 hectares last year. Meanwhile, the acreage for guar, which is a major crop grown in the state, fell to 2.45 million hectares from 2.72 million hectares a year ago, the report showed.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of southwest monsoon season, which usually starts around mid-June and are harvested in October. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 9, the state received 701.6 millimetres of rainfall, 73% above the normal of 405.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
