MUMBAI – Prices of edible oils were mixed, with soybean down, groundnut up and mustard steady in key spot markets in the country Tuesday, traders said. Traders expect edible oil prices to rise ahead of the Navaratri festival starting on Sept. 22, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed were steady in Jaipur in Rajasthan at INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country were steady at 275,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), from the previous day, according to GGN Research.

Mustard prices at Kota in Rajasthan were steady at INR 6,700 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 6,000 bags, up 1,000 bags from the previous day, he said. Due to heavy rainfall, arrivals were moisture-laden and there was little demand from millers, he said. Demand is likely to be firm ahead of the Navratri festival, when prices can rise by up to INR 500, Sameriya said.

SOYBEAN prices at Gondal in Gujarat fell by INR 100 to INR 3,800-INR 4,200 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals were at 116 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down from the previous day.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal rose by INR 300 to INR 4,500-INR 5,300 per 100 kg, said Virvani. Arrivals of the oilseed were at 417 bags (1 bag = 30 kg), he said. Arrivals fell due to heavy rainfall in Gujarat, which supported prices, he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has stopped importing groundnuts from India due to the high proportion of aflatoxin found in the oilseed. This is likely to severely affect Indian exports, according to media reports. Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain fungi found in crops and pose health risks. Indonesia is one of the major importers of Indian groundnuts. With the suspension, the export business is expected to face a major setback, leading to losses for farmers and exporters, Virvani said.
