MUMBAI – Prices of maize, rice, and wheat were steady Monday in key markets across the country due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. With arrivals to begin in October, traders expect maize prices to fall in the near-term.

MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere remained unchanged at INR 2,350–INR 2,450 per 100 kg. Arrivals of the grain were also steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. He said prices in Davanagere are likely to fall in October as the arrivals of new crop will start. Prices in other markets of Karnataka are likely to fall in the next 15 days as the arrivals in those markets will start in 15 days.

Maize prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,330 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader said. He expects prices to go down as arrivals of the new crop have started in a few markets. Expectations of higher maize output from the kharif season are likely to weigh on prices, traders said. As of Aug. 29, all-India maize acreage was up 12% on year at 9.4 million hectares, according to the government data.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi market of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000 and INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, Devendra Vora said. The prices of 5% broken rice were also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he said. The price of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori was also steady at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,610-INR 2,615 per 100 kg, despite a substantial rise in arrivals at 12,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 6,000-7,000 bags on Friday, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Prices are steady due to firm demand for the grain ahead of festival season. Prices of wheat in the Vashi market were unchanged at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Vora said.  End
