MUMBAI – Prices of oilseeds were mixed in key markets. While prices of mustard, soybean and groundnut fell in a few markets, they were steady in others, said traders. Demand for oilseeds was affected due to the poor quality of arrivals amid heavy rainfall in some parts of the country, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur were steady at INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country were at 200,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 50,000 bags from the previous day, according to GGN Research.
Mustard prices in Kota fell by INR 50 to INR 6,700 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 6,000 bags, same as the previous day, he said. Due to heavy rainfall, arrivals were moisture-laden and there was little demand from millers, he said. "There is going to be firm demand a few days before the Navratri festival, when prices can rise (by) up to INR 500," Sameriya added.
SOYBEAN prices in Gondal fell by INR 100 to INR 3,700-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals were at 6,500 bags, down from 10,900 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) the previous day. In Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, soybean prices were steady at INR 3,900-INR 4,500 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 3,300 bags, same as the previous day, Porwal said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, fell by INR 800 to INR 3,500-INR 5,000 per 100 kg, said Virvani. Arrivals of the oilseed were at 12,510 bags, up from 5,700 bags the previous day, he said. "Due to heavy rainfall, the quantity arriving is full of moisture content," Virvani said. In Ratlam, prices of groundnut were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg and arrivals were at 1,100 bags, same as the previous day, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has stopped importing groundnuts from India due to the high proportion of aflatoxin found in the commodity. This is likely to severely affect Indian exports, according to media reports. Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain fungi found in crops and pose health risks.
Indonesia is one of the major importers of Indian groundnuts. With the suspension, the export business is expected to face a major setback, leading to losses for farmers and exporters, Virvani said.
