MUMBAI – Prices of maize, rice, and wheat were steady Friday in key markets across the country due to lack of new cues, traders said. Market participants expect maize prices to fall in the short term, supported by prospects on higher output of the ongoing kharif season crop.

WHEAT prices in Kota were largely steady at INR 2,610-INR 2,615 per 100 kilograms due to lack of fresh cues, said local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals of wheat in Kota market were also largely steady at 6,000–7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

Prices of wheat in Indore market remained unchanged at INR 2,680 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. He also said he expects prices to remain steady as demand is offset by continuous arrivals of the grain in local markets. Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,330 per 100 kg, Kochar said. He expects prices to fall to INR 2,100 as the arrival of the kharif maize crops has started in a few markets.

Further, prospects of higher maize output from the ongoing kharif season are likely to weigh on prices, traders said. As of Aug. 29, the all-India maize acreage was up 12% on year at 9.4 million hectares, according to the government's data.

Prices of maize in Karnataka's Davanagere were unchanged at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady in the Vashi market at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of 5% broken rice was also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori was also steady at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

Meanwhile, India's Pusa Basmati rice prices rose to $925 per tonne in August from $875 in July due to low supply and firm demand from Iran, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $361.2 a tonne in August from $356.9 per tonne in July.

Prices of the 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $377.0 per tonne in August from $371.2 per tonne due to demand from Africa. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India fell to $368 a tonne from $380.2 per tonne in July.  End
