MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell and those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric fell due to panic selling amid estimates of a rise in acreage. Prices of jeera fell due to weak domestic and export demand, while prices of coriander rose due to strong demand and tight supplies in spot markets.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down nearly 2% at INR 12,212 per 100 kilograms due to panic selling amid estimates of a rise in acreage in the ongoing kharif season, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15–20% increase in sowing this season, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to cues of fresh domestic and export demand, SMC Global said. In the short term, weather developments in September will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above-normal rainfall during the month. Rainfall in September is likely to be above normal at 109% of the long-period average over most parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The most-active September contract of JEERA fell 0.6% to INR 19,335 per 100 kg due to weak domestic and export demand, Kedia Advisory said. Comfortable supplies and sluggish foreign buying are weighing on sentiment, they said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was up 0.7% at INR 8,230 per 100 kg as speculators increased their holdings, tracking firm demand in the spot market, analysts said. Prices also rose due to supply disturbance in spot markets owing to heavy rainfall in most parts of the country, SMC Global said.
