MUMBAI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India has sent a 16-member delegation on a week-long 'Sunflower Seed Complex Study Tour' in Russia to gain insights into production, processing, and exports of sunflower oil. Organised in association with the Russian Export Center Group and spearheaded by SEA President Sanjeev Asthana, the delegation aims to dive into Russia's sunflower story - from fields to factories, it said in a release.
This tour will also help in building direct bonds with Russian farmers, producers, and exporters, and pave the way for stronger trade ties and future opportunities between India and Russia, Asthana said.
The delegation has held over 30 rounds of discussions with Russian exporters of sunflower oil, soybean oil, and other commodities, according to the release. The team visited Voronezh, an agricultural hub in Russia renowned for its fertile black soil. The delegates interacted with top executives of EFKO group, Russia's largest edible oil company. EFKO is a leading supplier of sunflower oil and has expressed interest in expanding its collaboration with Indian importers.
On the second day of their visit, the SEA team met Anurag Nayan and Anugraha Viswanathan, Indian embassy representatives in Moscow. The Indian diplomats assured assistance in streamlining financial arrangements, particularly through the rupee–ruble payment mechanism. "We appreciate the commitment by Indian embassy and its support for strengthening trade between both the countries," said B.V. Mehta, executive director of SEA.
The team also met executives of Rusagro Group, a prominent Russian agribusiness company. The association's delegation also held talks with many other leading Russian brands. With the tour still underway, the association expects more business opportunities to emerge for both the countries.
India imports 2 million tonnes of its total 3.5 million tonnes of sunflower oil every year from Russia, making the country a significant player in the Indian sunflower oil market. End
