MUMBAI – Global coffee prices increased nearly 15% on month to 297.05 cents a pound in August, according to the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator. During the month, the composite indicator fluctuated between 249.12 cents a pound and 344.64 cents a pound, with a median value of 297.10 cents a pound, the organisation said in a report.
The effect of the US's 50% tariff regime on Brazilian coffee has influenced market behaviour in Brazil. "Elevated prices during both the 2023-24 and current coffee year have led to heavy destocking and strengthened capitalization of Brazilian producers." This improved financial position allows them to sustain operations for longer periods and prepare for the next harvest without immediate coffee sales, the report said.
The price of Colombian Milds coffee rose nearly 14% on month to 366.72 cents a pound in August and that of Other Milds increased 12.5% on month to 366.32 cents a pound. Brazilian Naturals rose over 13% on month to 366.88 cents a pound, while Robustas expanded the most, by over 19% to 199.13 cents a pound. The prices on the London Intercontinental Commodity Exchange increased by over 18% to 181.43 cents a pound and those in the New York ICE rose by nearly 14% to 328.57 cents a pound in August.
The Colombian Milds–Other Milds differential turned around, moving from 3.13 cents a pound to 0.41 cents between July and August. The arbitrage between the London and New York futures rose by 8.4% to 147.14 cents a pound in August, according to the report.
Global green beans exports in July fell by 0.7% on year to 10.3 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). This is the sixth month of negative growth in the current coffee year, with the volume of total green bean exports down 2.5% at 102.25 million bags in Oct-Jul, compared with 104.89 million bags during the corresponding period of last year.
Exports of Colombian Milds increased by 9.6% on year in July to 1.17 million bags. As a result, Oct-Jul volume rose 14.8% to 11.67 million bags. The main source of the positive contribution was Colombia, whose exports increased by 16.1% to 1.1 million bags in July from 0.95 million bags a year ago, and were up 13.2% in the first ten months of the coffee year.
Green bean exports of Brazilian Naturals fell by nearly 17% on year in July to 2.67 million bags. This is the second consecutive month in which exports of the Brazilian Naturals have fallen below the 3.0-million-bag mark, and the fifth consecutive month of negative growth. Brazil was the main driver of the downturn, with its exports decreasing by 23.1% to 1.97 million bags.
Green bean exports of Robustas rose over 5% on year to 3.92 million bags in July, mainly driven by growth in Indonesia, Uganda and Vietnam. This is the third consecutive month of positive growth, following five straight months of negative growth.
The Arabicas' share of the total green bean exports in Oct-Jul increased to 62.7% from 61.6% over the same period a year ago, down marginally from 62.8% for the first nine months of the current coffee year.
Exports of all forms of coffee from the world as a whole decreased by 1.6% to 11.42 million bags in July.
Coffee exports from South America fell by 18.5% on year to 4.4 million bags in July. Exports from Africa rose 4.4% on year to 2.05 million bags. Exports from Mexico and Central America rose over 7% on year to 1.63 million bags and from Asia and Oceania exports increased nearly 23% to 3.34 million bags in July, the organisation said. End
