MUMBAI – The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose Thursday on firm demand, while prices in other key markets remained unchanged, traders said. However, prices of rice and maize were steady in key markets across the country because of the lack of new cues.
WHEAT price in Indore rose INR 10 to INR 2,860 per 100 kilograms on firm demand ahead of the festival season, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. He does not see any further upside in wheat prices as the staple grain is arriving continuously at markets. The delay in the government's open market sales scheme is supporting prices, he added.
The market expects the government to start selling wheat in the open market at the end of September. The government usually begins open market wheat sales in July or August. For the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales.
Prices of wheat in Kota were steady at INR 2,610 per 100 kg. However, arrivals of wheat in the Kota market rose to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 2,000 bags Wednesday as the intensity of rainfall over the region has reduced, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said.
The price of MAIZE in Indore was steady at INR 2,330 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price is likely to fall to INR 2,100 as the arrival of the kharif maize crop has begun, he said. Additionally, the current rainfall is unlikely to affect standing maize crops, he added.
Prices of maize in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Demand for maize is expected to increase from next week as stocks held by traders and other intermediaries have been exhausted, Kumar said. Maize arrivals in Karnataka are expected to start early in October.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Punjab is likely to see a drop of 20-25% in basmati rice production for the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) owing to the recent heavy rainfall and consequent flooding, media reports said. Over 600,000 acres of basmati rice acreage has been hit by the heavy rains.
The price of 5% broken rice was steady at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori was also steady at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
