Telangana kharif acreage up 8% YoY at 12.71 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Telangana's kharif crop acreage in the week ended Wednesday was 12.71 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares), up 8% from 11.76 million acres in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage under major grains was 662,551 acres, up 22% from 543,875 acres last year.

 

Paddy acreage was 6.23 million acres, up nearly 13% from 5.57 million acres last year. The state's maize acreage rose 22% on year to 627,540 acres, the data showed.

 

Under the pulses, tur acreage was up just 1% at 478,690 acres from 474,466 acres a year ago. The area sown under moong was down at 61,257 acres from 65,724 acres in the previous year. The total area under pulses was up 0.5% at 564,807 acres from 561,992 acres last year, as per the report.

 

The area sown under major oilseeds was down, with groundnut acreage down at 7,275 acres from 14,789 acres a year ago. Area sown under soybean fell to 362,046 acres from 377,660 acres last year. Total oilseed acreage was down at 370,438 acres from 395,640 acres last year, the report said.

 

Cotton acreage was up at 4.55 million acres from 4.29 million acres last year. Sugarcane acreage rose to 33,549 acres from 1,597 acres in the previous year. The area sown under tobacco was also up at 2,908 acres from 1,597 acres last year.

 

As of Wednesday, water level in reservoirs across Telangana stood at 845.56 thousand million cubic metres, up from 776.60 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 3, Telangana recorded 734.1 millimetres of rainfall, 24% above the normal of 592.9 millimetres, according to data from India Meteorological Department.

 

In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 116.7 millimetres, ranging from 24.7 millimetres in the Narayanpet district to 334.6 millimetres in Kamareddy district, the state agriculture department said. Currently, the crops sown are at the vegetative growth stage to reproductive stage. "In areas experiencing excess soil moisture, rainfed crops (such as cotton, millets, pulses, and oilseeds) may face difficulty in absorbing nutrients from the soil," the report said.  End
