Maharashtra kharif area down 1% on yr at 14.53 mln ha as of Tue

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have planted kharif crops on 14.53 million hectares as of Tuesday, a 1% fall from last year, according to the state's agriculture department. Farmers had sown crops across 14.69 million hectares during the same period in the previous year.


The area under paddy rose to 1.51 million hectares from 1.48 million hectares last year. Area under maize was 1.45 million hectares, up from 1.12 million hectares in the corresponding year. The total area under all cereals in the state was 3.46 million hectares, up from 3.21 million hectares last year.

 

Tur acreage expanded to 1.219 million hectares from 1.217 million hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses so far was 1.87 million hectares, down from 1.91 million hectares, the report showed.


Farmers reduced the area sown under oilseeds, which fell to 5.11 million hectares from nearly 5.30 million hectares last year. The acreage under soybean fell to 4.96 million hectares from 5 million hectares, and groundnut acreage also fell to 135,321 hectares from 147,913 hectares.


Cotton acreage dropped to 3.84 million hectares from 4.08 million hectares, while sugarcane acreage increased to 250,267 hectares from 194,785 hectares.

 

As of Thursday, water levels in Maharashtra's dams were 86.20% of their live storage capacities, up from 77.35% last year, according to the state water resources department.  End
