MUMBAI – The central government has set up a record 550 centres across major cotton-producing states to procure the staple fibre in the 2025-26 kharif marketing season commencing from Oct 1. In a first, the Centre has laid down uniform norms for the establishment of procurement centres taking into account key parameters such as cotton cultivation area, availability of functional agricultural produce market committee yards, and availability of at least one stock processing factory, the Ministry of Textiles said in a release Wednesday.

On Tuesday, in a high-level review meeting chaired by Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, the preparedness for minimum support price operations for cotton during the upcoming 2025–26 kharif marketing season was assessed.

Procurement of cotton under the minimum support price will commence from Oct. 1 in the northern states, from Oct. 15 in the central states, and from Oct. 21 in the southern states. On May. 27, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs increased the minimum support price for medium staple cotton by 8.3% to INR 7,710 per 100 kilograms and for long staple cotton by 7.8% to INR 8,8110 per 100 kg.

The ministry of textiles has unveiled a new digital-first approach to cotton procurement, launching the 'Kapas Kisan' mobile application, an Aadhaar-based self-registration for cotton farmers, to ensure transparency and enable direct Aadhaar-linked payments to bank accounts of farmers through the national automated clearing house. This new app developed by Cotton Corp. of India will empower farmers by providing them with a direct and transparent platform to sell their produce, according to the release.

The ministry will also set up local monitoring committees at each agricultural produce market committee mandis for immediate redressal of grievances by the states. In addition, dedicated state-level helplines and a central Cotton Corp. of India helpline will be active throughout the procurement period, it said.  End
