MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose in Kota, Rajasthan, Tuesday owing to low demand while they were steady in other markets across the country, traders said. Prices of maize fell slightly in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on hopes of a higher supply, they said. However, prices of rice were steady from the previous day owing to the lack of fresh cues, they added.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota fell INR 10 to INR 2,600 per 100 kg due to low demand, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Prices fell despite arrivals falling to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 6,000 bags Monday following continuous rainfall in the region, he said. Prices are likely to be on a downtrend for a week or so due to subdued buying, Mehta said.

Wheat prices in Indore were steady from the previous day at INR 2,850 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, local trader. Wheat prices in the Vashi market, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said local trader Devendra Vora.

MAIZE prices in Indore fell INR 10 to INR 2,330 per 100 kg, Kochar said. He attributed the fall to prospects of higher maize production. However, he also said there has been some crop damage due to unfavourable weather conditions, the impact of which will only be known later this month.

As of Friday, the area under maize rose to 9.4 million hectares from 8.4 million hectares a year ago, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Monday.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady from the previous day at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, wholesale dealer Vora said. According to reports, Punjab is likely to see a drop of at least 20-25% in basmati production in crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) due to heavy rain and floods. Over 600,000 acres of basmati rice acreage has been hit by the recent heavy rains.

Estimates for actual crop damage will be known only by next week as rainfall is expected to continue this week, Vora added. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northwest India during the week. According to the weather bureau, northwest India recorded 142% above-normal rainfall at 95.7 millimetres during the week ended Wednesday.

Prices of 5% broken rice were unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were also unchanged at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
