MUMBAI – India's edible oil imports in August are estimated at 1.61 million tonnes, up 4% from July, driven by a surge in palm oil imports. This marks the country's highest imports of edible oils in 13 months, according to estimates by GGN Research accessed by Informist.

In July, the country had imported 1.50 million tonnes of edible oils, out of total vegetable oil imports of 1.60 million tonnes, according to data from The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. Edible oil imports for the first nine months of edible oil year 2024-25 (Nov-Oct) were at 10.80 million tonnes, compared with 11.90 million tonnes a year ago, according to the association.

Palm oil imports are likely to have surged 16% on month and 24% on year to 990,000 tonnes in August, according to GGN Research. "Palm oil imports (are likely to) reach a 13-month high," Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, said.

Sunflower oil imports in August are estimated to have increased 29% on month to 257,000 tonnes, reaching the highest level in seven months. Soyoil imports in August are estimated to have fallen to a six-month low of 353,000 tonnes, down 28% from July and 22% from a year ago, according to the data.

As of Sept. 1, vessels carrying a total of 455,000 tonnes of edible oils are in line to arrive or discharge at Indian ports in the next few days. Of the total, 185,000 tonnes is palm oil, 170,000 tonnes is soybean oil, and 100,000 tonnes is sunflower oil, according to GGN Research.

India also imported 6,000 tonnes of canola oil in August, GGN Research said. This was for the first time since October 2021.

In August, Nepal's edible oils import through Indian ports totalled 95,000 tonnes, comprising 88,000 tonnes of soyoil and 7,000 tonnes of palm oil, GGN Research said. In July, Nepal had imported 75,000 tonnes of soyoil, 4,000 tonnes of sunflower oil, and 4,000 tonnes of palm oil, or a total of 86,000 tonnes, through Indian ports, it added.  End
