MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell while those of urad were steady and prices of tur were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell due to subdued demand from millers and traders, traders said. Prices of tur were steady in some markets and fell in others due to the availability of cheaper imports from African countries, they said. Prices of urad were steady as demand for the legume matched supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 75 from Monday to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Demand for chana is muted as millers and traders have already stocked up on the legume for the near term, he said. The forward deals being made for imports of chana from Australia are at much cheaper rates than domestic prices, which is weighing on market sentiment, he said. The November and December shipments of Australian chana are being quoted at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, he said.

Prices of chana could rise by INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg after 15 days, right before Navratri, due to festival demand, Kedia said. The availability of cheaper imports of chana and yellow peas is preventing a steep rise in chana prices, he said.

Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 6,000-INR 6,025 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,750-INR 6,775 per 100 kg, Kedia said. The upcoming imports of tur from African countries such as Mozambique are weighing on prices, he said. "Prices quoted for African tur are very low, ranging between INR 4,800-INR 4,900 per 100 kg," he said.

Domestic tur prices are likely to remain under pressure from the cheaper rates of imports until they begin arriving in the country, he said. "Once imports hit ports, then prices could change depending on the quality of tur--if they (imports) are of lower quality, it could support domestic prices," he said. African imports are due to arrive in India from mid-September, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,850-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 7,325-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of the legume in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were also steady at INR 7,450 per 100 kg, they said. According to traders, prices are steady as the demand for urad is on par with the supply.

Urad prices are likely to remain firm due to supply concerns in major urad-producing regions in the country, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Heavy rainfall has disrupted harvest and damaged some of the urad crop in Maharashtra and Karnataka, it said. Crop damage has also been reported in Rajasthan and Bundelkhand, it said. Good-quality arrivals of the new urad crop are limited as most of it has been exposed to moisture due to continuous rainfall. Any moisture content in the legume lowers its quality.  End
