Gujarat kharif acreage tad up on yr at 8.24 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.24 million hectares as of Monday, up marginally from 8.23 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 96% has been covered so far.
Under major cereal crops, maize acreage was down at 278,910 hectares from 285,316 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Paddy acreage rose to 897,222 hectares from 884,703 hectares last year and area sown under bajra was also up at 172,030 hectares from 167,499 hectares last year.
Under the pulses, tur acreage was up at 280,692 hectares from 226,653 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under moong was down at 48,162 hectares from 54,807 hectares last year. Acreage under urad also fell to 82,540 hectares from 83,603 hectares last year. Acreage under all the pulses was at 430,046 hectares, up from 383,834 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was up at 3.11 million hectares from 2.79 million hectares in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares a year ago. Area sown under castor seed was up at 594,679 hectares from 528,444 hectares last year while that of soybean fell to 277,378 hectares from 299,808 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage was down at 2.08 million hectares from 2.36 million hectares last year. The area sown under vegetables rose to 252,592 hectares from 251,309 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun.1-Sept. 1, Gujarat recorded 673.6 millimetres rainfall, 12% above normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
