MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady on Monday as the sales quota for September was seen to be more than sufficient to meet the demand and resalers were not in a hurry to stock up the commodity, said traders. Prices are likely to increase in the coming days as demand is expected to rise ahead of the Navaratri festival, they said.

On Thursday, the government set the domestic sugar sales quota for September at 2.35 million tonnes, unchanged from a year ago. The quota is more than 4% higher than the 2.25 million tonnes for August.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady due to need-based demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. After the release of the sales quota for the month on Thursday, prices fell by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg, as they were higher than market expectations, Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, sugar prices were steady as the quota is seen as sufficient for September, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. "There are not many major festivals next month, only Durga Puja is there towards September-end," he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 3,990 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,092-NR 4,182 per 100 kg in Mumbai
