MUMBAI – Prices of pulses diverged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell due to muted demand from millers, they said. Tur prices rose as market activity picked up after a period of lull owing to Ganesh Chaturthi last week and prices of moong remained steady as demand for the legume matched its supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Friday to INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices fell due to subdued demand for chana dal or processed chana and besan or gram flour which is discouraging millers from making purchases, he said. Prices were also weighed down by the forward deals being made for imports of chana from Australia, which are cheaper than domestic chana. Chana shipments from Australia are likely to arrive in the country between October and November, he said.

The availability of chana stocks with the government is also keeping prices low, Kakani said. Several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, have issued tenders for the disposal of chana. "Market sentiment is very low, so I do not see any steep rise in prices in the next few weeks," he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 50 from the previous week to INR 6,050 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Friday to INR 6,650-INR 6,750 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 15–16 trucks, with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each, arrived in the market, he said. Prices were up on renewed demand after the market saw low activity because of Ganesh Chaturthi last week. "Market activity is usually low for the first five days of Ganesh Chaturthi as most participants keep away," he said.

In the near term, prices of tur will depend on the pace of imports from African countries and the extent of crop loss due to rainfall damage, Sanklecha said. Imports from African countries, which are cheaper than domestic tur, will begin arriving this month, he said. Meanwhile, continuous rainfall in key tur-producing states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka has resulted in damage to the standing crop in a few low-lying areas, though the extent of damage is currently unknown as the wet spell is yet to break, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous week to INR 6,850-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MOONG prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, held steady at INR 6,000-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of moong in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,900-INR 7,200 per 100 kg. Prices were steady as demand for the legume was on a par with its supply, Sanklecha said.

Prices are likely to fall in the near term once arrivals of the new kharif crop begin, Sanklecha said. "Arrivals of the crop should have begun by now but persistent rainfall in many parts of the country has put it on hold. Farmers do not want to risk damaging the crop by exposing it to rainfall," he said. Exposing the legume to a prolonged period of rainfall could introduce moisture into it, which lowers its quality, he added.  End
