MUMBAI – Wheat prices fell in most key markets across India, driven by the government's move to reduce the stock limit for trade entities, traders said. Prices of maize also fell on expectation of higher production in the current kharif season while rice remained steady in all key markets owing to the lack of further cues, they said.
WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 10 to INR 2,850 per 100 kilograms, Gaurav Kochar, local trader, said. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, fell INR 5-INR 10 to INR 2,605-INR 2,610 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices fell as the government lowered the amount of wheat that traders and other market participants can hold.
Tuesday, the government had lowered the limits on wheat held by traders ahead of the festival season to keep prices in check. The government reduced the maximum quantity a wholesaler can hold to 2,000 tonnes from 3,000 tonnes. The stock limit for retailers was reduced to eight tonnes from 10 tonnes. For chain retailers, the stock limit has been reduced to eight tonnes per outlet, down from 10 tonnes.
Wheat prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.
MAIZE prices in Indore fell INR 20 to INR 2,350 per 100 kg, Kochar said. He attributed the fall to prospects of higher maize production. However, he also said there has been some crop damage due to unfavourable weather conditions, the impact of which will only be known in September.
As of Aug. 22, the area under maize rose to 9.3 million hectares from 8.4 million hectares a year ago, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Monday.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi were stable at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively. Prices of 5% broken rice were also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were unchanged at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
