MUMBAI – Prices of mustard fell in one of the key markets and were steady in another, and prices of groundnut and soybean were steady, said traders. Demand for mustard is down owing to sluggish demand during the monsoon, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur fell by INR 25 from Wednesday to INR 7,300 per 100 kilograms due to need-based buying by millers, traders said. Arrivals of the oilseed across India rose to 250,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) from 150,000 bags on Wednesday, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.
Prices of mustard seed in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags, the same as the previous day, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Demand is sluggish at the moment as the oilseed arriving in the markets has high moisture content due to heavy rainfall in the state for the past 10 days, said Sameriya. Excess moisture promotes spoilage, degrades the oil, and reduces the oil yield, making the seeds less valuable to buyers and processors.
There is ample stock with farmers, as well as the government, which is why there is no concern of lower availability even when demand becomes firm ahead of festivals, he said. Ahead of Navaratri, prices might rise by INR 200 but not more as there is ample stock available, Sameriya added.
SOYBEAN prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,400 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals were at 9,400 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up from 4,380 bags on Tuesday, he said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were steady at INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, said Virvani. Arrivals fell to 1,400 bags from 4,600 bags on Tuesday. Arrivals will fall from here on, which could lead to a slight rise in prices. However, higher availability of cheaper imported palm oil could result in lower demand for the oilseed, traders said.
