MUMBAI – Wheat prices were steady in key spot markets in the country, with the government's move to reduce the stock limits for traders having no effect on prices, traders said. Prices of rice and maize were also steady due to a lack of fresh cues, traders said.
WHEAT prices at Kota in Rajasthan were largely flat at INR 2,610-INR 2,615 per 100 kilograms, local trader Aniket Mehta said. However, arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) Thursday due to unfavourable weather conditions, he said. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall over eastern Rajasthan during the next seven days. Mehta expects wheat prices to remain steady in the next 5-10 days.
Wheat prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said. He said there is no effect on wheat prices, even after the government reduced the stock limit for traders. The move is just a warning for multinational companies and a signal for the open market scale scheme, Vora said.
On Tuesday, the government cut limits on wheat held by traders ahead of the festival season to keep prices in check. The government reduced the maximum quantity a wholesaler can hold to 2,000 tonnes from 3,000 tonnes. The stock limit for retailers was reduced to eight tonnes from 10 tonnes. For big chain retailers, the stock limit has been reduced to eight tonnes per retail outlet, down from 10 tonnes, across the total number of outlets.
Mehta said the market expects prices to rise by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in September due to festive demand. Traders expect the government to start open market sales of wheat in September.
MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Demand for maize is expected to increase from next week, as stocks held by traders and other intermediaries are exhausted, Kumar said. Prices of maize are likely to rise INR 100-INR 150 per 100 kg as there is no crop left with farmers, he said.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi were stable at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively. Prices of the 5% broken rice were also unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were unchanged at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
