Maharashtra kharif area down 1% on yr at 14.5 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Kharif crops in Maharashtra have been sown across nearly 14.50 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 1% on year from 14.65 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Soybean acreage in the state dropped to 4.96 million hectares from 5.12 million hectares a year ago, the report showed.
The acreage under groundnut also fell to 135,277 hectares from 147,569 hectares sown a year ago. The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was down at 5.11 million hectares from 5.29 million hectares last year.
Maize acreage in the state was 1.45 million hectares, up from 1.12 million hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under paddy was up at 1.48 million hectares from 1.46 million hectares sown a year ago, while that of bajra fell to 325,311 hectares from 403,137 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all pulses so far was 1.87 million hectares, down from 1.91 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Tur acreage was up at 1.22 million hectares from 1.21 million hectares a year ago. The acreage under moong fell to 209,446 hectares from 234,867 hectares a year ago, and that of urad was also down at 375,551 hectares from 386,118 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage in the state was down at 3.84 million hectares from 4.07 million hectares a year ago, while the area under sugarcane rose to 250,479 hectares from 193,572 hectares.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 27, Maharashtra received 822.9 millimetres of rainfall, 5?ove the normal of 780.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 83.7% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 75.2 a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
