Steady in key mkts; wheat prices seen dn on stock limit cut

MUMBAI – Prices of maize, rice, and wheat were flat in key markets across the country Tuesday due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. Wheat prices are expected to fall as the government has cut stock limits on the quantity of wheat that trade entities can stock till Mar. 31, 2026. Markets are shut Wednesday on account of Ganesh Chathurthi.
WHEAT prices were flat on Tuesday in Indore in Madhya Pradesh at INR 2,860 per 100 kilograms, Gaurav Kochar, local trader, said. Prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said. In Kota, Rajasthan wheat prices were largely flat at INR 2,600-INR 2,615 per 100 kg, Mehta said. Arrivals were also unchanged at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
Mehta expects wheat prices to fall in the near term as the government has cut the stock limits on traders. Vora said it is the government's way to warn the market that it monitoring the market. Kochar from Indore also said prices were likely to fall by only INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg. "If the government want to control prices then it should start OMSS (open market sales scheme), stock limit will not have much impact," Kochar said.
A wheat trader or wholesaler cannot stock more than 2,000 tonnes, down from 3,000 tonnes earlier. Retailers can now stock only 8 tonnes in each of their outlets compared to 10 tonnes earlier. For big chain retailers, the stock limit is again 8 tonnes for each retail outlet and depot, and stock of 8 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets, the release said. Earlier it was 10 tonnes for each retail outlet and depot, and stock of 10 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets. It had first reimposed stock limits on trade entities holding wheat for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) on May 28.
MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kg. Arrivals were constant at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Prices of maize in Indore were also steady from the previous day at INR 2,370 per 100 kg, Kochar said.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi market were stable at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively. Price of the 5% broken rice was also steady at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori was unchanged at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
