MUMBAI – Prices of mustard fell in key markets and prices of soybean and groundnut were mixed, said traders. The decline in mustard prices was attributed to reduced demand from millers amid poor quality arrivals, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, fell INR 50 to INR 7,375-INR 7,400 per 100 kilograms due to poor demand from miller, traders said. Prices are likely to increase ahead of Navaratri festival. Arrivals of the oilseed across India were steady at 200,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.

Prices of Mustrad seed in Kota, Rajasthan, also fell by INR 50 to INR 6,800 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 4,000 bags, down from 5,000 bags the previous day, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Due to heavy rains, mustard that arrived in the markets had higher moisture content so there was less demand from millers, said Sameriya. Excess moisture promotes spoilage, degrades the oil, and reduces the oil yield, making the seeds less valuable to buyers and processors. The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over parts of Rajasthan again for the next few days.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 4,100-INR 4,700 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 5,100 bags, he said.

In Gondal, Gujarat, soybean prices rose INR 100 to INR 3,800-INR 4,400 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals were at 4,380 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up from 3,510 bags the previous day, he said.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 5,000-INR 5,800 per 100 kg. Arrivals were also steady at 1,400 bags, Porwal said. Higher availability of cheaper imported palm oil could result in lower demand for the oilseed, thus pulling prices down, traders said.

Groundnut prices in Gondal rose INR 200 to INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, said Virvani. Arrivals rose to 4,600 bags from 3,810 bags. Prices rose on arrivals of good quality crop, Virvani said. However, higher availability of cheaper imported palm oil could result in lower demand for the oilseed, traders said.
