MUMBAI - Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell while those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday. Prices of turmeric fell due to ample availability of the spice in Maharashtra and estimates of a rise in acreage in the ongoing kharif season. Jeera prices were under pressure from hefty carryover stocks while coriander prices rose on tight supplies and firm demand.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 1% at INR 13,240 per 100 kilograms due to adequate supply of the spice in the top turmeric-producing state, Maharashtra, analysts at SMC Global said. Turmeric acreage is likely to rise on year in the ongoing kharif season, which could further weigh on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15–20% increase in turmeric sowing this season, as farmers are opting for turmeric over other crops with lower profitability, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active September contract of JEERA fell more than 1% to INR 19,480 per 100 kg due to hefty carryover stocks, SMC Global said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, the brokerage said, Kedia Advisory said.

A rise in selling pressure is also weighing on prices, SMC Global said. The conclusion of the retail season and subdued foreign buying activity have kept market sentiment under pressure, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active September contract of CORIANDER was up 0.2% at INR 8,042 per 100 kg due to tight supplies and steady demand, as per SMC Global. In the longer run, profit booking and subdued buying interest at higher price levels may exert downward pressure on prices, the brokerage said.
