Gujarat kharif acreage down 5% on yr at 8.10 mln has as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.10 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 5% from 8.14 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 95% has been covered so far.
Maize acreage was down at 275,967 hectares from 284,956 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under paddy rose to 891,662 hectares from 882,494 hectares last year and that of bajra was also up at 171,521 hectares from 166,469 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage was 270,888 hectares, up from 223,791 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under moong was down at 47,470 hectares from 54,557 hectares last year. Urad acreage also fell to 77,416 hectares from 82,819 hectares sown last year. The total area sown under all pulses so far was 413,882 hectares, up from 379,042 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was up at 3.05 million hectares from 2.73 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 2.19 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares a year ago. Castor seed acreage was also up at 539,200 hectares from 469,826 hectares last year while that of soybean fell to 277,213 hectares from 299,706 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage was down at 2.07 million hectares from 2.36 million hectares a year ago. The area sown under vegetables fell to 249,061 hectares from 247,709 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 25, Gujarat recorded 635.6 millimetres of rainfall, 15% above normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
