MUMBAI – Wheat and maize prices fell slightly on Friday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to low buying, traders said. However, prices remained steady from the previous day in other key markets across the country on lack of fresh cues, they added. Prices of rice also held steady from the previous day, traders said.
WHEAT prices in Indore were down by INR 20 at INR 2,860 per 100 kilograms on low demand as the buying of the grain was largely subdued on Friday, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. However, a movement of INR 20-INR 30 on either side is negligible, he added. Prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were stable at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said. In Kota, Rajasthan, too, wheat prices held steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. He expects prices to remain range bound with a slight negative bias due to weak buying in the market.
However, arrivals of the grain fell by 5,000 bags in Kota to 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) because of the heavy rainfall, Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over east Rajasthan till Saturday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kg. Arrivals were unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. He said prices of maize are expected to remain steady for the next seven days and then rise by INR 100-INR 150 per 100 kg in September as arrivals fall.
Prices of maize in Indore were down by INR 30 at INR 2,370 per 100 kg due to low buying, Kochar said. Though prices fell Friday, crop damage in parts of the state is likely to support prices in the near term, he added.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi market held steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices of 5% broken rice in Vashi were steady at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he added.
Prices of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were also steady from the previous day at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are expected to be steady till November, he added.
Shankar said the paddy crop in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district had been damaged slightly by the recent rainfall. However, farmers have resown the crop, which may delay the harvest but will ensure that there is not much of an impact on the overall yield in the region, he added. End
