MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh fell as demand did not pick up at the existing prices and mills were also in a hurry to offload stocks, said traders. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady. Prices are likely to remain at the current levels until the release of the sales quota for September, traders said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg as demand was poor, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills are also feeling the pressure of meeting the sales quota for August before the month ends, which is why they are cutting prices, Gupta said.
Sugar prices rose about INR 90-INR 100 per 100 kg after the August sales quota was announced but have since fallen about INR 70 per 100 kg as demand has been subdued after the surge seen at the start of the month.
Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady on limited buying, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices will remain at the current levels for the next few days until the release of the sales quota for September, Kuvadia said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,890-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,890-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,092-NR 4,182 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1754 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.3% at 16.39 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices encourage diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing sugar production. End
US$1 = INR 87.53
