MUMBAI - The International Grains Council has projected global food grain output in 2025-26 at a record 2,404 million tonnes, up 27 million tonnes from the estimate of 2,376 million tonnes in July. The increase in overall production is mainly due to the expectation of higher production of maize due to "upgraded US maize area and yield projections", the council said in its grain market report released Thursday.

The council has raised its estimate for maize production in the US in 2025-26 to 423.5 million tonnes from 398.9 million tonnes in July. This will take the total global maize production during the year to 1,299 million tonnes from 1,276 million tonnes projected in July, according to the report.

The council has also raised its projection for global grain consumption in 2025-26 to 2,391 million tonnes from 2,376 million tonnes estimated in July. Amid record supplies and resulting price pressure, global consumption growth is forecast to accelerate, up 49 million tonnes from the previous year.

The council has projected global carryover stocks of food grain in 2025-26 at 597 million tonnes, up from 582 million tonnes projected in July. The council has also raised its forecast for global grain trade in 2025-26 to 437 million tonnes from 430 million tonnes in July.

The council raised its wheat production estimate for 2025-26 by 3 million tonnes from July to 811 million tonnes and consumption to 816 million tonnes from 814 million tonnes. World rice production for 2025-26 is seen at a record high of 544 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous month's estimate. The council also left its view for global rice consumption unchanged at 541 million tonnes.

Global soybean output in 2025-26 is projected at 430 million tonnes, up from 428 million tonnes a month ago. Global soybean consumption in 2025-26 is expected to rise to 430 million tonnes from 429 million tonnes projected in July.  End
