MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric were flat while those of coriander and jeera rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. While prices of jeera rose due to a rise in export demand from Syria, prices of coriander were up on firm demand amid tight supplies in spot markets.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was flat at INR 13,324 per 100 kilograms. Prices are expected to remain range-bound from INR 12,930 to INR 13,730 per 100 kg, analysts at SMC Global said. The market is expected to find support as industrial and seasonal demand should restrict any sharp decline, they said. Moreover, in the medium to long-term, tight supply conditions coupled with lower inventory levels are likely to lend further strength to prices, the brokerage said.

The most-active September contract of JEERA rose 1.3% to INR 19,670 per 100 kg supported by export demand from Syria, SMC Global said. However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited as demand from other countries in West Asia is subdued, Kedia Advisory said in a note. West Asian countries are among the top importers of Indian spices. Adequate supplies are also expected to put pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, the brokerage said.

The most-active September contract of CORIANDER was up 1.0% at INR 8,030 per 100 kg due to firm demand in the spot market and restricted supplies from producing regions, market analysts said. Prices are expected to be firm in the range of INR 7,710-INR 7,850 per 100 kg in the short term as the market is likely to adopt a wait-and-watch approach after the recent rise in prices, it said.
