Andhra Pradesh kharif area up 3% on yr at 2.03 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh have been sown across 2.03 million hectares as of Wednesday, up nearly 3% on year from 1.98 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's target area for the ongoing kharif season is 3.45 million hectares, of which nearly 59% has been covered so far.
The area sown under paddy was up at 1.08 million hectares from 956,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage also rose to 131,000 hectares from 105,000 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage in the state so far was 178,000 hectares, up from 170,000 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under moong was 4,000 hectares, unchanged from a year ago, while that under urad was up at 16,000 hectares from 15,000 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses rose to 199,000 hectares from 191,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was down at 200,000 hectares from 308,000 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut fell to 161,000 hectares from 263,000 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage was up at 368,000 hectares from 350,000 hectares in the previous year, according to the report.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Aug. 21, Andhra Pradesh recorded 351.4 millimetres of rainfall, 9% above the normal of 320.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
