MUMBAI – Prices of maize, rice, and wheat were steady in key markets across the country Thursday owing to the lack of fresh cues, traders said. Market participants expect maize prices to rise in September as arrivals of 2024's kharif crop in domestic markets will come to an end. Arrivals of the current year's kharif crop will only begin in October.

MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kilograms. Arrivals were also unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. He said prices of maize are expected to remain steady for the next seven days and then rise by INR 100-INR 150 per 100 kg in September as arrivals fall.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were also steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of 5% broken rice in Vashi were steady at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he added.

Prices of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were also steady from the previous day at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are expected to be steady till November, he added.

Shankar said the paddy crop in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district had been damaged slightly by the recent rainfall. However, farmers have resown the crop, which may delay the harvest but will ensure that there is not much of an impact on the overall yield in the region, he added.

WHEAT prices in Vashi were stable at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Vora said. At Kota in Rajasthan, too, wheat prices were steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. He expects wheat prices to remain range-bound with a slight negative bias due to muted buying in the market.

However, arrivals of the grain fell by 4,000 bags in Kota to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) because of the heavy rainfall, Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall over east Rajasthan till Sunday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall in a 24-hour period is likely to exceed 115.6 millimetres and go up to 204.4 millimetres.  End
