Telangana kharif area up 30% on yr at 11.87 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Farmers in Telangana have sown kharif crops over 11.87 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up more than 30% from 9.12 million acres sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Paddy acreage in the state rose over 73% on year to 5.48 million acres, the report showed.
The area sown under maize was up at 613,450 acres from 421,310 acres sown a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under jowar also rose to 34,274 acres from 33,409 acres last year.
Tur acreage in the state so far was 472,857 acres, up from 428,256 acres covered a year ago, the report showed. Similarly, the acreage under urad was up at 22,436 acres from 19,411 acres last year. On the other hand, the acreage under moong fell to 59,511 acres from 63,222 acres sown last year. The total area sown under all pulses was 555,942 acres, up from 512,250 acres a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was down at 366,529 acres from 389,513 acres sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 359,563 acres from 376,884 acres a year ago. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.
Cotton acreage in the state was up at 4.49 million acres from 4.21 million acres sown a year ago, the report showed.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 773.29 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 718.43 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. Since Jun. 1, the state has received 586.3 millimetres of rainfall, 15% above the normal of 509.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 137.4 millimetres, ranging from 38.9 millimetres in the Karimnagar district to 246.0 millimetres in the Medak district, the report said. The timely rains have been crucial in alleviating moisture stress in rain-fed crops. "Currently, the crops sown are at the vegetative growth stage to reproductive stage, and overall crop condition is reported to be healthy," the report said. End
